In a basement shower I use a multi-piece, direct-to-stud surround in most bathrooms: it carries down the stairs, goes up fast and has no grout to maintain. The Delta Classic 500 three-piece surround at $499 is my go-to for a 60-inch shower; BuildFlow's standard surround budget is $300 and premium $3,000.
For the door, a semi-frameless sliding door like the DreamLine Essence at $620 is the practical pick against a $500 standard budget. When a shower is tiled, a plain white 3x6 ceramic subway tile at $1.20 a sq ft is the best value in the store.

Surround or tile: the short version
I've written the full comparison in shower insert vs tile. The short version: a one-piece shower won't fit down most basement stairs, which is why multi-piece and direct-to-stud surrounds exist. They are the easiest showers to keep clean and the fastest to install. A tiled shower is a bigger project with a waterproofing membrane behind it, and it's worth it when the shower is the focal point of a guest suite.
| Multi-piece surround | Tiled shower | |
|---|---|---|
| Gets down basement stairs | Yes, in pieces | Yes, tile comes in boxes |
| Grout to clean | None or very little | Yes, unless epoxy or single-component grout |
| Look | Clean, simple; some have a tile pattern molded in | Fully custom |
| BuildFlow budget | $300 standard | Covered by the $3,000 premium budget |

Choosing a shower door
- Sliding (bypass) doors fit 56 to 60-inch openings and don't swing into a small bathroom. They're the default over a 60-inch shower base.
- Hinged and pivot doors fit narrower showers, like a 32 or 36-inch stall. Hinged shower doors must open outward, so leave room for the swing. The plumbing code calls for a clear opening of at least 22 inches.
- Glass thickness. Framed and semi-frameless doors typically use 3/16 or 1/4-inch glass; frameless doors use 3/8 or 1/2-inch glass, which is heavier and feels more solid.
- Out-of-plumb walls. Framed and semi-frameless doors tolerate walls that are a little out of plumb better than frameless ones. Basement walls framed on a slab are often a little off.

Tile for a basement shower or bathroom floor
If the shower is tiled, I keep the tile simple and spend on the waterproofing behind it. A classic white ceramic subway tile is the best-value wall tile there is, and it never looks dated. For floors, porcelain is the choice: by definition it absorbs 0.5 percent water or less. For a shower floor or a bathroom floor that gets wet, pick a tile with a wet DCOF of 0.42 or higher, the slip-resistance threshold for level interior wet spaces. The tile guide covers sizes, grout and the subfloor.

Design my basement with EmmaQuestions people ask
What is the best shower for a basement bathroom?
Usually a multi-piece, direct-to-stud surround over a matching base, because one-piece showers rarely fit down basement stairs and surrounds have little or no grout to maintain. Delta's three-piece Classic 500 at $499 is my go-to for a 60-inch shower.
How much does a basement shower surround cost?
The surrounds on this page run from $269 to $749 at The Home Depot's current prices. BuildFlow's standard surround budget is $300 and premium is $3,000.
Sliding or hinged shower door for a basement?
Sliding over a 56 to 60-inch shower, because it doesn't swing into a small room. Hinged or pivot doors suit narrower stalls and need a clear opening of at least 22 inches.
What thickness of glass is best for a shower door?
Framed and semi-frameless doors typically use 3/16 or 1/4-inch glass; frameless doors use 3/8 or 1/2-inch glass, which is heavier and more solid. Semi-frameless doors are more forgiving of out-of-plumb walls.
What tile is best for a basement bathroom floor?
Porcelain, which absorbs 0.5 percent water or less, with a wet DCOF of 0.42 or higher for slip resistance. Many basement bathrooms simply continue the waterproof vinyl plank from the rest of the basement.
