A basement bathroom usually has no window, so I light it in two layers: a recessed light or fan-light over the shower and a vanity light that lights your face. Mount a vanity bar about 75 to 80 inches above the floor, roughly 3 inches over the mirror, or a pair of sconces 60 to 70 inches high on either side of it.
In BuildFlow's standard finish the vanity light budget is $100 and the mirror budget $150: a three-light bar like the Hampton Bay Ashhurst at $56.97 and a framed 24 x 36 mirror at $111 both fit.

Why a basement bathroom needs two layers of light
Upstairs, a bathroom window does half the lighting during the day. Below grade, every bit of light is a fixture you chose. One ceiling light in the middle of a small bathroom puts shadows under your eyes at the mirror; a vanity light alone leaves the shower dark. I always plan at least two layers:
- Task light at the mirror. A vanity bar above the mirror, or sconces at its sides. Side lighting puts light on both sides of your face and leaves fewer shadows than a single light from above.
- General and shower light. A recessed light or a combination fan-light. Over the tub or shower it has to be listed for damp or wet locations, which the electrical code requires for fixtures in that zone.
- Optional night light. A low light in the fan or an LED mirror on a dimmer is the nicest small upgrade in a guest bath.
| Fixture | Where | Mounting guide |
|---|---|---|
| Vanity bar | Above the mirror | About 75 to 80 in from the floor, about 3 in above the mirror |
| Sconces | Either side of the mirror | 60 to 70 in high, near eye level, about 36 in apart |
| Recessed or fan-light | Ceiling, over the shower | Listed for damp or wet locations in the shower zone |
Mounting heights from The Home Depot's vanity light guide. The electrician sets the boxes during rough-in, so pick the fixtures and the mirror size before the walls close.
Pick the right white
Color temperature matters more in a windowless room. ENERGY STAR describes warm white as about 2,700 to 3,000 K and cooler, daylight-like light as 5,000 K and up. For a basement bathroom I use 3,000 K: warm enough to feel like part of the house, white enough for shaving and makeup. Many current LED fixtures and mirrors let you switch the color temperature; set them all the same so the room doesn't look patchy. The full lighting plan for the rest of the basement is in lighting a basement.
Sizing the mirror to the vanity
My rule: the mirror is never wider than the vanity, and on a 30 to 31-inch vanity a 24-inch-wide mirror leaves room for sconces on both sides. A 48-inch vanity can take a 36 to 48-inch mirror with a light bar above it. Hang the mirror so its center sits near eye level for the people who use the bathroom most.

Design my basement with EmmaQuestions people ask
How high should a vanity light be above a bathroom mirror?
About 75 to 80 inches from the floor and roughly 3 inches above the mirror for a light bar. Sconces beside the mirror go 60 to 70 inches high, near eye level, about 36 inches apart.
What color light is best for a basement bathroom?
About 3,000 K. ENERGY STAR describes 2,700 to 3,000 K as warm white; 3,000 K is warm enough to feel welcoming and white enough for grooming in a room with no window.
Do lights over a shower need to be special?
Yes. Fixtures in the tub and shower zone must be listed for damp or wet locations under the electrical code. A recessed light or fan-light rated for the shower is the usual choice.
What size mirror should go over a 30-inch vanity?
No wider than the vanity; a 24-inch-wide mirror leaves room for a sconce on each side. A framed 24 x 36 mirror like the Hermitage Bath Cosy at $111 is a good fit.
How much does basement bathroom lighting cost?
Good vanity lights run from about $56.97 to $89.97 at The Home Depot's current prices. BuildFlow's standard vanity light budget is $100 and premium $300.
